"As with dance, circus artists don’t cheat with their body."
The circus today is no longer a minor art limited to a clown with a red nose, but the new 21st century circus is a proper art, like dance or the theatre, born of training and teaching.
Anny Goyer, director of the Ecole Nationale des Arts du Cirque (ENACR) [National Circus Arts School] at Rosnysous- Bois manages with passion this hybrid institution and its twofold mission. On the one hand, since 1991 she has overseen the superior professional training by a first cycle which prepares for the Brevet Artistique des Techniques du Cirque [Circus Technique Artistic Diploma]. On the other hand, she offers an amateur training course to initiate adults, young people and children to the art of acting, dance and the development of the imagination.
Circus is above all " a creative adventure " emphasises Anny Goyer, her eyes sparkling. The magic is there, just as for other art forms such as dance or the theatre. The circus artist has become a creator to the same degree as a dancer or an actor.
At ENACR, performance, physics, anatomy are taught together with the history of the circus and music. A former performer of aerial activities, the director of the school trained on the trapeze and the tightrope amongst others. She knows the risks of the job. " As with dance, circus artists don't cheat with their body" emphasises Anny Goyer. That's why we decided to cover the concrete surface with Harlequin ALLEGROTM vinyl floor. But it's just possible that this passage is the real school of life…
For the Light King, “ Harlequin means Happiness! ”
"There is before and after Harlequin."
In Paris, the mythical concert hall, the Zénith, is empty. It is only half past one in the afternoon on January 14th, the day of Jacques Dutronc’s big return to the stage after A 17 year break.
Giant mirrors hanging from the ceiling reflect the Harlequin HI-SHINETM vinyl floor which seems to multiply to infinity the gleaming musical instruments elaborately set up on the stage. In the centre is enthroned the artist’s stool - that of Jacques Dutronc, the original dandy of French song. With his insolent and provocative humour, Jacques has been making his mark for several decades. He returns to the stage in 2010.
So, on this early afternoon in January, we are meeting another Jacques - the talented lighting designer Jacques Rouveyrollis!
«I have to immerse myself in the work of the artist. Everything is tailored, because the plays of light have to gel with the content. Black for Dutronc, but a Dutronc style black !».
Jacques Rouveyrollis evokes light with poetry and passion. He reveals his sources of inspiration, and then talks to us about Harlequin, and more specifically the Harlequin HI-SHINETM floor. When he first worked with this floor, it was like a revelation, a revolution even. “There was a before Harlequin and an after Harlequin” he insists.
«The Harlequin floor has profoundly changed my staging. Its magical reflections produce surprising and natural effects, like the reflections of water, which have always fascinated me. Before, we worked on the black glossy parquet which absorbed the light. With Harlequin HI-SHINETM, however, it’s as if there was a mirror on the stage. The reflections are infinite.»
And for this enlightened poet, this magician of light, for whom the most beautiful light is still the sun, « Harlequin means happiness ! »
