Harlequin Activity Floor with Hardwood Surface

Crystal Cruise Line’s new ship, Serenity, being fitted out in St. Nazaire, Franc

The Requirement

A sprung Harlequin Activity Floor with jatoba surface to be installed to the stage of the Galaxy Lounge, totalling 210m2 and incorporating a turntable of 5.2m diameter. In addition, 100m2 of black Harlequin Cascade vinyl to the wing areas and around the bandstand at the rear of the stage.

The Installation

The fitting-out of the vessel had fallen behind schedule, which gave the operators considerable anxiety, because they were obliged to meet a cruise timetable. By bringing together Harlequin technical specialists from around Europe and working day and night the team saved the day by compressing a complex technical installation of three weeks into ten days. The well-known sprung floor system was adapted to take a top surface of solid jatoba (a mahogany-like hardwood), which was adhered and fixed by lost-head nails, before being finally sanded and coated with a fire-retardant sealer to bring out the full richness of the wood. The turntable was constructed flush with the stage surface and a gap of only 3mm left around its perimeter. Access hatches were built into the floor, together with smoke vents and apertures for lights along the curved front edge of the stage. The black Harlequin Cascade was fully adhered to the side wings and all seams welded.
